Best ranger elite..
I was just wondering what the best one be overall... Oh and can you capture more than 1 elite but use that elite later in the game and switch between elites?
Thanks.

yes, you can. you can cap as many elites as you want and use any one you want at any given time (assuming you are in a town to switch skills out).
and what would be considered the "best" elite for a ranger is extremely versatile.

Yes you can but more cap signets and capture more elite skills. A good ranger (marksmanship) elite for pve is barrage.
You can cap whatever you want, but the price goes up each time you buy something (a cap sig) from a skill trainer, and that cost maxes out at 1k.

There is no "best". GW is way to situational for that kind of talk. I'm sure there will be an abundance of people coming giving you their opinions though.

yes, in most cases it purely situational. i.e. If you fight a boss with no flesh and you have poison arrow...that blows...

I still forget that I've been playing a crappy online game called runescape for 5 years that has no versatility whatsoever. Glad I quit/semi-retired lol.
Anyway I know there is not a "best" but I just want too see some opinions.

The top 5 ranger elites are hard to pick or choose from one another, but can give you some good options...before last week I would have had a hard time picking one above the rest- however, after getting to use it for the first time extensively this last week or so to vanquish in HM I would have to say [skill]Crippling Shot[/skill] is the best "all around" ranger elite. (best "all around" IMO, based on skill effect vs. efficiency of cost- other opinions will vary, or other elites in certain builds and situations will work better)

The "best" question, like said has no answer but some of the more highly regarded elite Ranger skills are...
[skill]Crippling Shot[/skill], movement speed control is powerful. Called snares.
[skill]Magebane Shot[/skill] interupt you can't block? Disables too? Sign me up.
[skill]Burning Arrow[/skill] can we say condition pressure?
[skill]Broad Head Arrow[/skill] the power of daze compels you, the power of daze..whoops
[skill]Punishing Shot[/skill] once a hallmark of ranger spike long ago.
There are many other ones that are great for certain builds/bars/situations also.
[skill]Rampage as One[/skill] Thumpers now run this instead of..
[skill]Ferocious Strike[/skill] which they used to run.
[skill]Famine[/skill] for certain farming builds(usually 2-3 man not full teams).
I could go on for...well too long, Rangers have many elites that are usable but imo, the first 2 I mentioned are really the only ones that matter to me.

Melandru's Resilience ftw
[skill]Melandru's Resilience[/skill]
No other skill comes in handy better, especially if you're a ranger secondary for, say a warrior.

Generally an elite skill is only as good as the bar you put it in. In other words, if you don't have the right support skills, your "elite" skill will be anything but.
As others have said, you can't really call one elite skill "the best overall". It really depends on what you're trying to accomplish and the other skills you plan to use it with.
EDIT: Since this became a "my favorite Ranger elite is" thread, here's mine: [skill]magebane shot[/skill]

type in: [ skill]"name of skill"[ /skill] without the spaces in the brackets and with the actual name of the skill instead of "name of skill", and for most skills you'l get the skill icon to appear. (some skills that don't see much use won't appear, but most will)

Generally, [skill=text]broad head arrow[/skill] is my most-used elite in PvE - total caster shutdown is pretty damn sexy; especially given how insane (-ly annoying) certain caster bosses get in 'harder' parts of the game.
Barrage (probably most-used by the PvE community) rarely sees a spot on my bar nowadays - Volley has almost entirely displaced it, for nuking stuff with Splinter Weapon ('cuz then I get to bring a useful elite )
For PvP, it's different - each elite that you throw onto the cookie-cutter ranger bar (DShot / Savage / Apply / Nat Stride / Troll / MTouch / Res sig) slightly alters playstyle and the niche you're filling - Cripshot for battlefield control; Burning Arrow for a strong, dangerous skirmisher; Magebane because you're an annoying bastard (drop Savage for Debilitating Shot/an offensive skill)...
or Poison Arrow 'cuz you're a unique snowflake (switch Apply for Barbed Arrows).
Or Escape because you liek being immortal. yarr

Barrage with no question for the best Ranger elite. Capping Barrage is in my opinion the "Coming of Age" for new Rangers, acquiring one of the most versatile skills Rangers have.
